GHG Protocol Scope vs ISO Category Comparison Table

The Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG Protocol) and ISO 14064-1 both provide frameworks for organisations to measure and manage their greenhouse gas emissions. However, they differ in the number and categorisation of scopes or categories.

In the 2018 version of the ISO standard the reference to the GHG Protocol scopes was removed. However, it remains best practice to align the ISO standard's six categories with the GHG Protocol scopes when communicating the footprint to stakeholders.

With the increase in value chain reporting, we see that many ISO inventories include the fifteen GHG Protocol Scope 3 categories, yet the alignment of scopes and categories can be a source of confusion.
